Use and interpretation of ECMWF products - 30 Sept-3 Oct 2024

Dear participants,

Welcome to the e-learning section of the Use and interpretation of ECMWF products course that will take place at the ECMWF headquarters in Reading on 9 to 12 October 2023.

The aim of the course is to increase your ability to examine, assess, and utilise ECMWF output products and to provide you advanced training on the operational aspects of the ECMWF forecasting system. It will help you when using ECMWF products either directly for forecasting or in research and development work. The aim is to help you get maximum benefit from our Centre's products!

Lectures on a variety of aspects of the ECMWF forecasting system and ECMWF forecasting products will be complemented with practical sessions where you will work in small groups with an expert trainer to assess ECMWF forecasts in real case study situations. You will also learn how to effectively use web applications for data visualisation.

An example timetable is shown for the course in 2022 to give you some idea of what is covered, we will inform you once this years' edition is final. Please note that ask lectures will be given in English.

As you know, you will be required to complete pre-course activities which will take up around 12 hours of self-study. These activities include completing online e-learning modules, creating a poster or presentation on how you are currently using ECMWF products and contributing to online discussion forums. The completion of these tasks will ensure you all have the knowledge to get the most out of the interactive part of the course and it will also help the trainers to better understand what you would like to achieve and discuss during the course.

We encourage you to explore this e-learning platform and make use out of its interactive functions such as the forums, to get to know each other and discuss anything you'd like between participants ahead of meeting each other in October.

Welcome to the e-learning section of the "Numerical methods for weather prediction" training course that will take place at the ECMWF headquarters in Reading on 11 to 15 November 2024.

This course describes contemporary methods, recent advancements, and the challenges in numerical techniques which are used across a wide spectrum of weather prediction models for solving the governing equations of atmospheric dynamics on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. The covered methods have relevance in short-term and medium-term forecasting, seasonal forecasting, climate prediction, as well as global and limited-area modelling.

Parametrization of subgrid physical processes - 20-24 November 2023

Dear participants,

Welcome to the e-learning section of the "Parametrization of subgrid physical processes" course that will take place at the ECMWF headquarters in Reading on 20 November to 24 November 2023.

During the course each parametrized process is introduced and then discusses theory, modelling and verification over several sessions.

This five-day course itself is a combination of lectures, hands-on practicals, group problem classes, and suggested elements of pre-course study that will be presented and completed here on this e-learning platform.

The pre-learning activities are a mix of mandatory and voluntary lessons, and will ensure you have the knowledge to get the most out of the practical parts of the course. Specifically, they will provide introductory information on parametrization, convection and single column modelling that will be used during the practicals. Activities include completing several online e-learning modules, contributing to online discussion forums, and creating a poster and accompanying mini presentation.

Predictability and ensemble forecast systems 2024

Dear participants,

Welcome to the e-learning section of the predictability and ensemble forecast systems course that will take place at the ECMWF headquarters in Reading on 27 November to 1 December 2023.

This five-day course will tackle the challenge of making predictions from days to seasons ahead. The predictability of the atmosphere in the medium and extended range will be considered, including different aspects of the Earth system which give rise to predictability on longer time scales. Elements of a probabilistic forecast system as well as its calibration and verification will be presented.

The course itself is a combination of lectures, hands-on practicals and group discussion sessions, and suggested elements of pre-course study that will be presented and completed here on this e-learning platform.

Completion of these pre-learning activities are voluntary, but recommended, since they will ensure you have the knowledge to get the most out of the practical parts of the course. Activities include completing several online e-learning modules, contributing to online discussion forums, and creating a poster and accompanying mini presentation if you've submitted an abstract prior.
